Fiona Kingston (née Strang) was born in Birmingham to an ear, nose, and throat surgeon and a consultant family planning doctor. Fiona wanted to be a doctor from an early age. With her characteristic determination she would catch an early bus to school, arriving before it was open, to sit on the doorstep. She was told by the bemused teachers not to turn up quite so early. Later, Fiona excelled in her medical studies at Birmingham University and was awarded prizes in obstetrics and gynaecology and ENT.
She became a registrar in obstetrics and gynaecology. She spent a year working in Durban, South Africa, where she was faced with alarmingly busy obstetric on calls managing women in extremis. She was dedicated to her …
