George Charles Jenkins was educated at Wyggeston Grammar School in Leicester and undertook his primary degree at Queen’s College, Cambridge, before transferring to St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical School in 1950. His training was interrupted by national service for two years at RAF Weeton (Med Branch) from 1952 to 1954, in Blackpool, where he attained the rank of squadron leader. He met his future wife, Elizabeth, who had trained St Thomas’s Hospital as a Nightingale nurse, while she was working in the Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Corps. They married in April 1956.
