Juliet Mary Gould (“Julie”) was born into a family with medical connections. Her father, Donald Gould, was a doctor, as were his two sisters, and her mother, Edna, was a registered nurse. She was born in Hertfordshire, but was taken to live in Hong Kong when she was a few weeks old, her father having secured a position as a doctor in the Colonial Medical Service, and subsequently as a lecturer in the medical school of Hong Kong University.
