bmj;382/sep04_11/p2032/FAF1faValery Hache/AFP/GettyFrench health authorities fumigate areas of Paris for the first time to kill disease carrying tiger mosquitoes (Aedes albopictus), whose rapid advance through northern Europe is thought to have been accelerated by climate change. The mosquitoes, which can carry the dengue, chikungunya, and Zika viruses, have been a health problem in the south of France for several years but are now being found further north, even as far as the English Channel coast. The first pesticide spraying in Paris took place on 31 August in Paris’s 13th arrondissement, around the house of a person who had contracted dengue fever while travelling, to prevent tiger mosquitoes becoming a carrier of the disease.
