Social care should not be seen as a “national living wage” job, says minister


Social care staff should be better rewarded for their work and their role should never be seen as a “national living wage” job, MPs have been told by a government minister.

During an oral evidence session held on 2 May on reform and funding of adult social care, MPs on the parliamentary health and social care committee challenged social care minister Helen Whately about the state of the sector.

MPs asked the minister to explain why the government had recently said it was halving the previously announced funding allocated to develop the social care workforce from £500m to £250m.
