Merle Liivand, ‘Mermaid Merle’, as many call her, wanted to set her fifth Guinness World Record for swimming 30 miles around Biscayne Bay in Miami, Florida and collect trash.
In a report, the Florida Department of Environmental stated that the high level of debris in the bay was a threat to wildlife and public safety.
